The Special Projects Group (SPG) is seeking a lead mechanical engineer to drive detailed design, simulation and test activities for mechanical devices involving moving parts and dynamics. This role will be responsible for conceptual design, detailed design, development and commercialization of new devices all the way through to start of production. In addition to performing hands on engineering design and modeling work, the role also involves close collaboration with other engineering skillsets including controls, electrical engineering, software and thermal.

Key Qualifications

  • Hands on, extremely detail oriented mechanical engineering background
  • Professional track record of developing mechanism designs that achieve ingenuity and high performance attributes particular to various applications. For example: low friction, low backlash, low noise, high stiffness, low cost, low mass, environmental, etc
  • High degree of skill in analyzing forces, moments, deflections through free body diagrams, hand calculations and forms of computer aided modeling such as FEA, multi body dynamics, etc
  • In depth knowledge of metallic and polymer material properties, surface coatings, lubricants, friction and wear
  • In depth knowledge of different bearing types, sizing
  • Strong mechanics fundamentals
  • Design of compliant structures (flexures, living hinges)
  • Dynamics fundamentals and basic dynamics simulation ability
  • Supporting skillset and process ability needed to achieve very high product reliability, safety and manufacturability attributes - FMEA, Validation Planning
  • Working knowledge of controls, electrical and software aspects associated with the applications and test rigs


Research and articulate targets and requirements for new applications Lead brainstorms and rapid prototyping activities to converge on leading concepts Perform detailed modeling and mechanical design of hardware in NX, FEA, Simscape, etc Issue specifications, drawings and manage vendors to manufacture hardware Write validation plans and reports Provide project leadership and work with partner teams

Education & Experience

Formal Mechanical Engineering education, MS or higher preferred Elective course work and research depth in mechanical design, mechanisms, dynamics
