At Apple, we constantly push the boundaries of design and manufacturing to deliver the world’s finest electronic products. Materials are central to our design philosophy, and as a member of the Materials Engineering Team within Manufacturing Design, you will be tasked with developing and scaling innovative metal casting processes to achieve industry-leading quality. You’ll work directly with our suppliers to bring new designs and materials to reality, and interface regularly with teams to influence the development of new products from the beginning.
Work onsite and remotely with our raw material suppliers to communicate development objectives and build common understanding.
Develop casting and related processes including heat treatments to meet our functional and cosmetic requirements.
Utilize Designs of Experiment for data-driven process refinement.
Summarize and report process information and trial results to multi-functional teams.
Support new materials as they scale towards mass production, establishing robust process SOPs and in-process quality controls.
Audit new suppliers and evaluate their technical capability and equipment suitability for our needs.
Drive the selection of new equipment or technologies as needed to achieve cosmetic or functional requirements.
- 5+ years hands-on process development in a metal casting facility (aluminum direct chill slab and billet casting experience strongly preferred)
- Experience developing and optimizing casting processes for unique alloys and challenging functional/cosmetic requirements
- Master’s degree or higher in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Manufacturing, or equivalent experience
- Periodic international travel (~ 25%) to support process development
- Deep understanding of the impact of casting process parameters on resulting microstructure and material properties
- Skilled at using metallurgical analysis tools to diagnose issues and drive process corrections
- Flexibility to tackle challenges in new areas, and to apply a broad foundation of knowledge to identify methods of investigation and study
