Apple is looking for an experienced and creative cartographer to help us shape the future of Apple Maps. The Cartography Engineering team at Apple Maps focuses on the technology used to style Apple Maps. In this highly collaborative role you will be working with world class designers, cartographers and software developers to bring new map features to life.

Key Qualifications

  • Familiarity with CSS-like cartographic styling languages, such as Carto CSS.
  • Intermediate Python proficiency with experience utilizing relevant libraries (shapely, pandas, arcpy, etc) for data analysis, process automation, and spatial analysis is strongly desired.
  • Understanding of HCI/UX/UI principles.
  • Proficiency with at least one relevant programming language (Python preferred) and software development lifecycles required
  • Demonstrated proficiency with GIS software such as QGIS and ESRI ArcGIS
  • Desire to help shape the toolchain required to support these needs.

Description

We support many teams here in Apple. Our team builds tools and provides cartographic display data for others to bring to bear Apple Maps into their solutions. We support all of Apple’s platforms, so as an engineer on our team, you will have the potential to positively impact millions through our products and services! As a member of our team, your activities will include: Being responsible for the overall architecture of the styling infrastructure Defining and implementing new styles for all layers of the map Improving and maintaining styling codebase to streamline future development Articulate display concepts and curate innovative and user-friendly tools which empower developers and display engineers alike Collaborate with cartographers, designers and other specialists as you take pride and ownership in delivering delightful user experiences

Education & Experience

Bachelors degree in cartography, geography, GIS, or related field with at least 2 years of relevant job experience.

Additional Requirements

  • While the following skills are not necessary, they would be helpful in understanding our space:
  • Two years of experience designing and implementing small and large scale digital and paper map products
  • Experience working with a variety of spatial datasets, including (but not limited to): road networks, land use, landcover, points of interest, buildings, public transit, system data, hydrological networks, elevation/terrain (DSMs, DTMs, etc), and multi-source imagery.
  • Deep geographic knowledge, including familiarity with cartographic conventions and expectations outside of the United States
  • Demonstrated skill curating map content and improving the accuracy and effectiveness of information display
