Technical contributor role involved in the development, qualification and benchmarking of advanced materials and cell designs related to rechargeable lithium ion battery technology. Individual works internally with cell engineering, materials development and new product introduction groups, as well as, external companies to investigate emerging technologies. Direct involvement in the validation of materials / technologies of interest for consideration in future production programs.

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum three to five years of direct battery design and production development including, performance / safety characterization experience with emphasis on lithium ion or lithium metal rechargeable battery cells.
  • Familiarity with applicable test equipment, test procedures, international standards and certified agency requirements applicable to rechargeable lithium battery products.
  • Experience in working with external vendors and contractors to develop and qualify battery materials and designs for consumer applications
  • Background in evaluating new materials and design concepts on both prototype and mass production scale lines
  • Understanding of applying quality tools and their application to assist with the evaluation / qualification of new material technologies and advanced design concepts
  • Failure analysis know-how on prototype and production cell designs including participation in the development / recommendation of corrective action(s) to address identified issues
  • Practiced in benchmarking of competitive cell designs including materials / design analysis
  • Strong aptitude towards material and / or battery design development including evaluation and optimization to meet specified requirements.
  • Capacity to assume ownership of assignments and execute with minimal oversight
  • Capability to work effectively with other engineering teams to arrive at a suitable overall battery design
  • Excellent data analysis, written and verbal skills
  • Competent in statistics and applicable statistical software tools
  • Experience with mathematical modeling of lithium ion battery designs is also desired
  • Strong aptitude towards material and / or battery design development including evaluation and optimization to meet specified requirements.

Description

Works with cross-function teams to develop performance requirements, SOPs and data summary templates Provides engineering support to evaluate new / improved lithium rechargeable materials and cell designs with external vendors from early concept phase to qualification status Using quality tools, determines process capabilities, define root cause, executes DOEs to address issues / optimize settings, summarizes design qualification data and determines acceptability against target criteria for acceptance Works effectively with suppliers, contractors, internal cross-functional groups, support staff and management to ensure that new materials and product designs are developed in accordance with schedule and budget Conducts investigations related to internal / competitive cell designs and applicable materials, prepares related status report updates and makes recommendations Assists with the transfer of new material and design concepts into prototype and high volume production lines Pursues development of intellectual property to protect technology developments and secure competitive position

Education & Experience

MS in Material Science, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering or better.
