In this role you will support mechanical characterization of energy storage materials and systems with the use of materials characterization and mechanical testing techniques. Develop methods based on project needs for a comprehensive understanding of mechanisms and root causes for mechanical deformation and failure, covering the length scale ranging from the macro (cell/system) to micro (component/material) level. As part of materials characterization team, you will be expected to get trained and support additional characterization techniques, review data from other analysts and coordinate the use of multiple techniques, to drive the projects by providing materials understanding and correlation between materials properties and performance in a system.

Key Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science, mechanical engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for mechanical characterization of battery materials, components and systems
  • Hands-on experience in characterization (optical microscopy, SEM, FIB/SEM) and mechanical testing instruments (Nano-indenter, universal testing machines such as Instron,
  • etc.)
  • Knowledge of batteries, battery materials and their characterization by mechanical and materials analysis methods
  • Preferably experienced in computational and simulation methods for mechanical behavior of batteries and components
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills


•Acquire, analyze and interpret data from mechanical testing (indentation, tensile, compression peel test etc.), materials characterization analysis (Optical, SEM, FIB/SEM, etc.) •Identify and define the right characterization techniques for submitted samples and execute focused characterization projects to drive root-cause analysis and a deep material understanding •Get trained and support other materials analysis techniques to address needs from projects involving characterization •Interface with other departments including production and R&D to collaborate on projects involving characterization •Adhere to best in class lab practices: maintain an organized and clean laboratory environment, ensure sample piece location is controlled, follow all lab safety regulations

Education & Experience

•Ph.D. in physics, materials science, mechanical engineering or related field
