Speech Algorithm Research Intern

Apple is seeking highly skilled and creative students passionate about advancing speech and audio technologies on the audio algorithms team. As a member of the team, you will research multi-modal deep learning approaches to demonstrate video, audio, and other signals for improving speech and audio acquisition. You will work alongside a group of researchers developing machine learning and multichannel signal processing technologies for speech improvement including source separation, adaptive beamforming, dereverberation, and source localization. You’ll collaborate with multiple teams across product development, software, and Siri to integrate your ideas into products and build future technologies that will impact millions of Apple customers.
- Research experience in speech algorithm development (patents, papers, etc.)
- Experience with multi-microphone algorithm development
- Experience with machine learning for speech processing
- Working knowledge of deep learning toolkits (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.)
- Fluency in Python
- Experience with machine learning methods for video scene understanding a plus
- Experience with speech recognition systems and toolkits a plus
As an intern on the audio algorithms team you will research and invent novel solutions for meaningful speech and audio problems that directly affect the future of Apple products. The audio algorithms team is part of the Interactive Media Group in Software Engineering which provides audio, video, and graphics support across all of Apple’s products, including iPhone, iPad, HomePod, AirPods, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Watch. The IMG Audio group is a hardworking group of audio engineers and researchers building high profile features such as FaceTime, Siri, music playback, audio/video capture, and game audio for macOS, iOS, watchOS and tvOS. Internship opportunities are available in Cupertino and Los Angeles.
