Functional Design System Engineer

Santa Clara Valley (Cupertino), California, United States

Role Number:200129191
We are seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic system engineer to own functional design for the Hardware Systems Integration Team. This is a design role responsible for determining the preferred implementation of product features through functional and behavioral design decisions at all levels of the product hierarchy. There will be significant opportunities for architectural influence. Our team owns the top-level electrical design and is responsible for the system as a whole. Our responsibility begins in the architecture phase and we carry the system through design, change management, build, and verification. We set physical interface definitions for all components and are responsible for maintaining consistency and completeness as we integrate them into a highly complex, interdependent system. In addition to design work, our team serves as liaisons for all electrical aspects of the products we develop. We’re building a functional equivalent to all of the work that we do on the physical design. This will ultimately provide all collateral necessary to capture the functional and behavioral design of the system. Outputs will include a function list, functional schematic, interface definitions, and more. Our ideal candidate is someone with classical system engineering experience who’s eager to establish a more lightweight, high value workflow. We believe a model-based approach to functional design will allow us to deliver results quickly and provide a platform to build additional value over time. There will be significant emphasis on cross-functional leadership, achieved through working with technology teams to arrive at solutions that work for both them and the product. Developing strong credibility and rapport with other engineering and non-technical teams is also a must. You should be comfortable presenting technical content and understanding how to tailor the narrative based on your audience and desired outcome.

Key Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics preferred
  • 5+ years overall experience
  • Superior written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Hierarchical design modeling [Matlab, Simulink, SysML, Python, Perl]
  • Requirements management [Polarion, DOORS]
  • Model Based System Engineering (MBSE)
  • Product-level electrical integration experience, with fluency in PCB, embedded system, and circuit design
  • Understanding of mechanical design and software development processes in order to approach problems from their perspective and anticipate their needs
  • Experience designing high volume and/or high reliability products from beginning to end; leveraging contract manufacturers

- Own top-level functional design model of a highly integrated, interdependent system - Use model to generate functional spec documents for each system component - Capture customer requirements and translate them into engineering requirements - Maintain traceability of features and functions to the hardware that implements them - Ensure the system architecture is capable of implementing the product feature set - Optimize product mechanical layout around functional interdependency - Evangelize our functional design and development processes - Plan functional verification and validation Apple is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to inclusion and diversity.
