By collaborating with other product development groups across Apple, you’ll push the industry boundaries of what batteries can do and improve the product experience for our customers across the world. As a member of the battery materials characterization team you will perform failure analysis for energy storage devices such as lithium batteries to support enhanced battery development goals. You will design and carry out experiments to study factors that influence the degradation of battery cell components under different cycling conditions. You will also implement a systematic investigation approach for identifying the causes of failures and develop recommendations for corrective action.

Key Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in Li battery research with hand-on lab expertise in material and failure analysis
  • MSc or higher degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry or related field
  • Expert level of knowledge and preferably hands-on experience in multiple characterization techniques used in FA studies including X-ray computed tomography, XRD, cross-sectional analyses (microtoming, FIB), IR, white light interferometry, SEM/EDS, XPS, Raman, NMR as well as thermo-mechanical characterization of polymer and ceramic films
  • Key knowledge in materials science, interface/surface science and electrochemistry relevant to battery materials and failure analysis work
  • Experienced in interpretation of the electrical/electrochemical measurements (CV, EIS etc) for materials and failure analysis investigations
  • Strong verbal and written communication, teamwork and project management skills
  • Attention to details, ability to work well individually and in team settings


•Organize and carry out characterization and battery failure analysis work to support R&D, engineering and production departments •Acquire and interpret analytical and cell test data using materials characterization and electrochemical techniques to supplement FA activity •Perform tear downs and prepare reports •Prepare and maintain procedures, validate methods and equipment, develop and implement FA protocols and failure replication testing •Determine best techniques and most effective paths to attain the desired information to uncover failure modes •Train, guide and define tasks for technicians to facilitate work at high-standards

Education & Experience

•MSc or higher degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry or related field
