Apple designs consumer electronics that have touched millions and changed the way people interact with electronic devices around the world. The Optical Engineering team within Hardware Test Engineering (HWTE) is seeking a Instrumentation Design Scientist who will develop technologies, methodologies, and instrumentation for the calibration and validation of complex optical technologies within Apple products. This scientist will design effective measurement systems and methodologies with a cross-functional team across Apple with the final goal of better quantifying the performance and capabilities of Apple optical technologies.

Key Qualifications

  • Required Experience
  • A thorough understanding of optics, kinematics, and mechanical design
  • Ability to model and simulate mechanical and optical systems using Zemax, Code V, etc…
  • Scripting skills in Python and Matlab
  • Fluent in both oral and written English
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; excellent judgment; a self-directed, proactive approach to tackling problems and working through impediment and an ability to generate trust and build alliances with co-workers
  • 5+ years of related work or academic experience
  • Experience with statistical analysis on large data sets
  • Experience with machine vision cameras and imaging algorithms
  • Experience with metrology, including a working knowledge of measurement uncertainty, gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R), and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
  • Experience with tolerance analysis and simulation techniques such as Monte Carlo, etc…
  • Experience with image rendering platforms such as Autodesk Maya and V-Ray
  • Experience with cloud computing
  • Familiarity with environmental testing standards, e.g. IEC 60068
  • Familiarity with color science concepts and CIE color spaces
  • Programming experience (C/C++/Objective-C)
  • Our optical systems support labs, factories, and processes that run close to 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in sometimes non-ideal conditions. Creating instrumentation and processes that perform at a high level in this environment requires understanding complex system interactions collaboratively solving problems.

- Design and specify optical instrumentation for use in lab and factory environments -Design new and update existing optical calibration and validation methodologies - Explore and validate approaches to optical calibration for validation of new Apple technologies in lab and factory environments

Education & Experience

MS/PhD in Physics, Optics, EE, CS, ME, or equivalent
