The Apple Product Design Materials team is expanding development capability in thin-film processing, characterization, and testing. The selected candidate for this position will lead and coordinate development of new thin film PVD coatings for functional and cosmetic applications. Responsibilities include oversight of experimentation, management of a complex development workflow, coating process development, and materials characterization.

Key Qualifications

  • Experience in thin film PVD process development across a broad range of materials
  • Knowledge of process parameter relationships and trades as well as experience with system troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with and experience using XPS, XRD, nano-indentation, and other relevant techniques for characterizing thin films
  • Familiarity with the spectrum of electron microscopy and related measurement methods (EBSD, EDS, EELS), the limits of the methods, and their interpretation


The candidate will have experience in thin film deposition and the accompanying analysis techniques for thin film characterization, including but not limited to XPS, nano-indentation, XRD, and electron microscopy. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in 1) lab installation and oversight and 2) process engineering and automation. This position will require a high degree of self autonomy, flexibility, and open-ended problem solving.

Education & Experience

A minimum of an M.S. in Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
