Hardware Systems Architect - Apple Watch
Santa Clara Valley (Cupertino), California, United States
Hardware
Watch is the most personal device we have. It has become part of our outfit and being worn on the wrist it can do things our other devices can’t. It is a fitness partner that’s always there. It keeps us connected to the people and things we care about most and it’s always looking out for us.
The Watch Architecture team is responsible for architecting every new Watch product from early concept phase to detailed block diagrams that can be executed on. This work includes close collaboration with both internal and external technology, silicon and module development teams on new feature exploration and improvements, definition of key silicon and/or chipset selection and nailing down system interactions and trade offs.
You ideally have strengths in several functional areas to lead, drive or influence system module roadmaps and feature definitions. You should have experience analyzing systems, making architectural and implementation trade-offs; design of high performance, low power, high quality products; scope component area requirements, interconnect requirements, integration challenges, Signal & Power integrity, Electromagnetic coexistence and power budgeting and analysis. This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills.
Key Qualifications
- Review & influence module roadmaps; keep current with technology trends; Multi-functional collaboration with other module and SW teams
- Work with x-functional engineering managers and architects on HW/SW enabling technologies
- Create internal and external system specifications
- Review & influence system performance decisions
- Define, simulate, and model product performance vs. power, area, cost and schedule.
- Specify, negotiate, and document system power management & user level behaviors
- Define, develop, and utilize tools, scripts for system modeling and analysis; tool and model development and maintenance
- Assess and track product system integration risks & implementation trade-offs with early fit studies
- Use schematic and layout tools such as Cadence Concept & Allegro; develop new and novel methods of pre-route guidance
- Assess hi-speed interface needs
- Predict & prepare for future product system integration & interconnect needs
- Mentor junior engineer for standard methodologies in systems development
- Prototyping, bring-up and debugging
- Peak power and battery life modeling/characterization of new features and definition of mitigation strategies to minimize impacts.
- Basic RF link budget analysis, analog and sensor or audio signal chain analysis.
Description
You have strong written and verbal communication skills coupled with your strong project and time management experience lending to your ability to drive multiple projects concurrently. We are a team of extremely fast learners across HW and SW engineering disciplines (be broad) with an insatiably curious about how and why things work and an impeccable intuition.
- You have 10 yrs+ experience in system-level design for consumer electronics and embedded programming experience are strong pluses!
- Scripting expertise (Perl, python, MATLAB, etc.)
- Schematic capture (any package) with placement/routing experience required (at some point in career)
- You are hands-on in prototype bring-up and debugging, functional verification, manufacturing support, and have created and influenced system specification documents
- Position may require some domestic and international travel
Education & Experience
BSEE required; MSEE is a strong plus.
