Function as the subject matter expert for structural characterization of energy storage materials and systems with using X-ray/neutron scattering techniques! Develop methods based on project needs using XRD, in-situ XRD, beamline-based X-ray and neutron scattering techniques to develop deep understanding in materials and address failure mechanisms and root cause. As part of materials characterization team, it will be expected to get trained and support additional characterization techniques. You will review data from other analysts, and coordinate the use of multiple techniques to drive the projects by providing materials understanding and correlation between materials properties and performance in a system.

Key Qualifications

  • Acquire, analyze and interpret data using X-ray diffraction (ex-situ/ in-situ) for phase identification, Reitveld refinements, texture, residual stress analysis
  • Identify and define the right characterization techniques for submitted samples and implement focused characterization projects to drive root-cause analysis and a deep material understanding
  • Coordinate beamline-based characterization studies (X-ray/neutron scattering and imaging, pair distribution functional analysis, SAXS, SANS, TXM/XANES and XAS etc.) with National Labs and user facilities
  • Perform additional materials analysis techniques to address needs from projects involving characterization, train with internal experts and external providers
  • Work with other departments including production and R&D to collaborate on projects involving characterization
  • Adhere to best of class lab practices: Maintain an organized and clean laboratory environment, ensure sample piece location is controlled, follow all lab safety regulations


Ph.D. in physics, materials science, or related field (preferably with X-ray/neutron scattering as a part of graduate level studies) At least 4+ years of hands-on experience (after PhD) in advanced structural analysis techniques including scattering techniques Deep knowledge of batteries, battery materials and their characterization by scattering methods Demonstrated track record of in-situ and synchrotron measurements under different sample environments (temperature, pressure, mechanical load, electric field) Preferably experienced with advanced X-ray/neutron scattering techniques including pair distribution functional analysis, X-ray/neutron imaging, SAXS, SANS, TXM/XANES and XAS as well as other laboratory characterization techniques. Excellent written and oral communications skills

Education & Experience

- Ph.D. in physics, materials science, or related field (preferably with X-ray/neutron scattering as a part of graduate level studies)
