Applied Biomechanics Researcher, Apple Design Team
The Apple Design Team is seeking an Applied Biomechanics Researcher to support the
development and design of future products. This is an active role where collaboration with an
immense number of partners across the company is necessary. An ideal candidate has fluency
across disciplines related to human experience, though focused expertise in biomechanics is
necessary. They readily move between minute details and big ideas. Comfortable in any
environment, their presence reassures others and solicits unfiltered feedback. They are
technical, but also extremely intuitive and empathetic, capable of expressing objective evidence
through compelling storytelling, championing the holistic human experience.
The Applied Biomechanics Researcher will be an integral part of an interdisciplinary research
team within Design, generating insights to support product development. This role is
responsible for framing questions, conducting studies, analyzing data, interpreting results,
communicating actionable insights, and facilitating collaboration with cross-functional research
teams. The team is expected to balance scientific curiosity, engineering practicality, and design
sensibility.
Some responsibilities include:
• Work hands-on with prototypes.
• Work with mechanical, electrical, and soft goods engineers on building novel and custom
instrumentation.
• In conducting studies, should have the ability to gather robust biomechanics data while
gauging and incorporating subjective feedback, with the agility to adapt research methods
• Data reduction, analysis, and interpretation.
• Clear, concise, actionable communication of research to designers and cross-functional
audiences.
• Ability to zoom in and out - see the minute detail and big picture concurrently.
- 3-5 years research experience: Musculoskeletal, soft tissue, locomotion, exoskeleton biomechanics, and sports biomechanics
- Prior experience working in industry is highly preferred.
- Prior experience working with designers and engineers is highly preferred.
Master’s Degree or PhD in related fields.
- • Wide range of biomechanics toolboxes: 3D motion capture, inertia measurement unit (IMU),
- instrumented force/pressure measurements, electromyography (EMG), muscle oxygenation,
- indirect calorimetry, musculoskeletal modeling, finite element modeling for soft tissues.
- • Software: Matlab, Python, LabView, OpenSim.
- Please send your CV and a visual portfolio that demonstrates your previous research and
- development experiences.
