As a Materials and Test Development Engineer within the Materials Product Design organization you will drive the rapid advancement of materials and processes that are the building blocks of our devices.

Description

As a Materials Architecture and Test Development Engineer, you will work with a world class team of material experts to help us develop and test new material solutions for a wide range of Apple products. Responsibilities of the role include 1) development and integration of the materials and processing needed to enable new product designs 2) characterization and specification of material properties, 3) failure analysis, and 4) the development of new test techniques, fixtures, and protocols, needed to ensure the manufacturing quality meets the material specifications. You will collaborate closely with our cross-functional partners in Product Design, Manufacturing Design, and Reliability to help deliver groundbreaking material solutions and products to our customers. This role is located in region with our suppliers, and we are looking for a future leader that can independently drive the developments at the suppliers while also building the relationships with the suppliers that are needed to leverage their capabilities. Teamwork, leadership, and excellent communication is critical in this role.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS Materials Science Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or a similar field
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanics and failure mechanisms of various materials.
  • Background in utilizing mechanical intuition to design test set ups in CAD, which generate specific material failure mechanisms. Able to validate and apply these tests to large scale manufacturing settings at vendor sites.
  • Experience with material qualification process, making data-driven decisions justified with material and component level test results.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills. Experience leading project teams and development projects
  • 5+ years of experience in industry
  • English proficiency

Key Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Failure analysis experience in materials manufacturing setting. Familiarity with metrology techniques used in identifying materials issues and proposing corrective actions.
  • Experience interpreting results from materials analysis methods (SEM-EDS, XPS, and others)
  • Experience working on products with cross-functional groups (manufacturing, reliability, and others) to drive decisions that influence a product or roadmap direction.
  • Fixture design experience focused on high precision alignment and tolerance analysis (2+ years of experience)
  • Experience using modeling applications to inform material selections (FEA, MATLAB, and others)
  • Background generating and driving R&D projects from proof of concept to implementation, especially those within materials fields (chemical, optical, etc...)
  • Strong analytical / problem solving skills and ability to use statistical tools and techniques.
  • Flexibility and comfort working in a quickly changing environment.
