Product Design Engineer- Applied Research and Characterization
We want your help creating prototype hardware systems needed to study the customer experience for future Apple products! We are looking for a new teammate with excellent design and fabrication skills, a deep attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication to collaborate with a diverse group of cross-functional partners.
Success in this role will require creativity, confidence, organization, and energy tempered by a sincere willingness to listen, learn, and understand what is needed from your designs. We want you to guide brainstorm sessions and quickly incorporate feedback to create electromechanical prototypes and testing apparatus. We’re looking for a solid understanding of mechanical engineering first principles, with deep experience in mechatronics design, sensor integration, and data acquisition. The hardware our teams builds must perform reliably in user studies and executive demos.
In this role, you will bring new ideas to life via the use of first principles analysis, CAD tools, sensor integration, and a combination of machining, additive manufacturing, and softgoods prototyping processes. Sketching and free body diagrams will be meaningful communication tools, and judicious use of GD&T and tolerance analysis will be expected. Key Responsibilities Include: applying a mix of technical and creative skills to quickly design and build instrumented prototypes and measurement systems, supporting manual and automated data collection and analysis, improving design and customer experience via engineering analysis to understand system inputs and outputs, and establishing relationships with product design teams across Apple and helping cross functional teams identify the best design path.
- Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 2+ years relevant work experience
- Experience designing and fabricating measurement systems or instrumented prototypes
- Experience applying engineering first principles (statics, mechanics, etc) to evaluate designs
- Experience using CAD and basic lab tools to enable rapid design and fabrication of test fixtures and measurement systems
- Proficiency gathering, analyzing, and visualizing data with Matlab, Python, LabView, JMP, or similar
- Ability to travel up to 5% internationally and up to 10% domestically
- Experience with technical leadership
- Familiarity with a wide variety of sensor technologies, data acquisition systems, signal processing, and statistics techniques
- Interest in wearables & human measurements
