As an integral part of Manufacturing Design’s Color & Materials team, create highly cosmetic surfaces on finished goods complying with our innovative performance color standards. Work with Apple’s Industrial Design and Product Design teams to develop and realize color targets on various material substrates.

  • ♣BS/MS in engineering (textile, chemical, materials science, mechanical or equivalent)
  • ♣5+ years of experience in development of dyeing/finishing processes for yarns/textiles, silicones and/or resins (PU, PET, PC) components, preferably in a hands-on role developing new cosmetic finishes for components
  • ♣Experienced in developing a variety of dyeing and finishing processes meeting both cosmetic and performance/functional requirements
  • ♣Expertise in establishing process controls that adhere to strict color specifications
  • ♣Ability to use spectrophotometer to characterize color standards
  • ♣Solid understanding of DOE principals and use of statistical software
  • ♣Ability to plan, execute, and present results from investigations using statistical analysis and clearly communicated results and recommendations
  • ♣Knowledge and ability to execute corner and limit sample analysis in preparation and in-process manufacturing
  • ♣Ability to drive, enforce and close root cause and corrective action process
  • ♣Must have above average, preferably superior color discrimination ability
  • ♣Solid understanding of chemical and mechanical properties of materials as they relate to manufacturing requirements and process drivers
  • ♣Experience working with an international supply chain
  • ♣Ability to reconcile DFM (design for manufacturing) feedback with design goals
  • ♣Must read, write and speak fluent English

Understand ID’s design goals on color appearance for finished goods. Match, pilot and scale new colors for mass production. Utilize dyeing and finishing techniques to meet challenging new targets. Research new methods for creating new dyeing and finishing process, implementing tighter control of existing finishes. Evaluate manufacturing processes at early stages of product development to define critical process requirements and controls for tightest output. Plan and execute studies to confirm process capability to achieve high yields on high volume finished goods. Present analysis to key decision makers that will be used to make commercial, cosmetic and design commitments. Evaluate supplier capabilities and address shortcomings relative to company needs. Drive on-site support in conjunction with cross-functional team members for implementation of manufacturing processes at supplier locations. Build relationships with these counterparts and suppliers, and foster development of their capabilities and expertise. Maintain working knowledge of key process drivers and subject matter expertise in the technologies to serve as technical resource on project teams. Investigate and validate innovative dyeing and finishing processes, techniques, and equipment where appropriate. Frequent travel expected.
